A High Schooler Writes About THE CAMP

I would like to tell you a little bit about my experience at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center. This summer, my mom and dad signed me up for the MAD program, which was the Music Art and Drama camp. Now when I first found out that I was going to be sent to a church camp, I was like, oh no. I was not really into God at that point in my life and I was dreading every minute of waiting to go to The Camp.

On Sunday, July 11, my sister and I headed down to The Camp with my mom. We I complained the whole way there. We finally got there and were greeted by a bunch of the counselors screaming and yelling, "WHOO," and, "YEAH". We met with our counselors, and we played some get to know you games, which were actually kind of fun. Then the other people in our group started showing up and I made a new friend right away. She and I were talking before we were getting ready to go to the evening worship. She felt the exact same way that I did. That night at worship we just stood there and clapped and that was it.

The next morning we woke up and went to the morning worship, and we actually had a lot of fun. So at lunch we decided that we should just get into it. We figured that it was only a week and it was not going to kill us. That night at worship, I have to say that I had the best time of my life. I was jumping up and down and getting into it, and singing along. The evening worships were almost like a rock concert, and they were a ton of fun. The rest of the week flew by.

In the mornings my group would work on a skit and go over the song that we wrote. We would go to lunch, have our siesta, (rest hour) then go to swimming, Bible study and work on our play some more.

Each day there was a theme and night activity. On Monday, the theme was God creates. We would read a passage from the bible about how God's creation. That night we had the Olympics, which was awesome. On Tuesday, the theme was God provides, and we had a luau and water carnival that night. Wednesday was God protects, and we had square dancing. Thursday, was God loves, and we had a talent show. Also on Thursday we had a healing service, when you could go up and talk to one of the chaplains about things that were on your mind. It was a very emotional night for everyone. Friday night was our last night there, and the theme was God calls. We had a closing campfire that night.

Every day after breakfast, lunch, and dinner, at the worship services and at the activities, there would be singing. The songs were so much fun and you could tell that everyone was getting into them. There were hand and dance movements, which went along with them. All of the counselors were unbelievable. They would talk with you about things that you had problems with, and they were always there when you needed them. They were incredibly supportive. At the end of the week I had made many new friends and bonds that I will never forget as long as I live. I have come away from this amazing experience being closer with God and in my faith. It is very peaceful up there, and it's just so easy to say that you could stay there forever. That camp is like a second home to me, and I know that I can go there and just relax and be with everyone. I can not wait to get back up there next year and be a counselor. I had one of the best times of my life. It has been a tremendous learning experience that I will never forget as long as I live. I hope that with this article we can get more kids to go to The Camp and discover God and that he will always be there for you no matter what. I also hope that they will have as much fun as I had while I was up there.
